Toward “Ultimate Safety.” We wish to achieve zero accidents
for both our passengers and employees.
We are working to ensure the safety and stability of railway transportation and to prevent occupational accidents,
with the goals of “zero fatalities and injuries to our passengers,
zero fatalities and accidents requiring time off by our employees, and zero train operation accidents and serious incidents.”

Employee safety and other initiatives
Safety training
Safety training utilizing VR (Virtual Reality)
We provide empirical training to employees, utilizing VR devices to simulate hazardous experiences, so that their sensory capacity for ensuring safety can be improved. For example, our VR training program uses hazard-simulating contents that recreate the experience of a human body contacting a train, which is a common occurrence in the rail transport industry. This is designed to enhance our employees’ awareness and sensory capacity crucial for moving within the Rolling Stock Centers and performing their operational tasks safely.

Safety training utilizing VR
Safety training at JR East facilities
We also conduct safety training using safety simulators (dubbed “safety experience dojo”) and other safety education facilities that are located within JR East’s General Rolling Stock Centers. Our employees also go through training at the Accident History Exhibition Hall, located within JR East’s General Education Center in Shirakawa City, Fukushima. It is designed to foster a culture of safety among our employees by immersing them in a sensory experience of several catastrophic accidents that occurred in the past that teaches them what their social responsibilities are, and also by providing them with an opportunity to contemplate on accidents and safety as members of the JR East Group.
Investing in safety-enhancing equipment and facilities
We actively invest in equipment and facilities that improve safety with a view toward creating a safe and optimal work environment for our employees.
Examples of investment in safety-enhancing equipment and facilities
・Illuminance improvement: Installation of LED lights
・Improvement of working environment: Installation of air-conditioning systems and elevating work platforms
・Heatstroke prevention: Implementation of air-conditioned clothing, evaporative cool air blowers, and large-scale spot air-conditioners
